Case Type: Nonprofit & Community Organization

Google Review Cards for Nonprofits

Good work, done quietly.
Let people say so.

Nonprofit and community organization reviews come from volunteers' friends, event guests, donors and the families a program helped. They are often the first thing a new donor or volunteer reads. TapLocal App℠ sets up or cleans up your Google profile, places an NFC + QR Google review card where visitors and guests see it, and hands you a report on what people already say.

No gating. No incentives. No guarantees. Ever.

// Why nonprofits are a special case

Trust is the whole mission

New donors and volunteers look you up

Before giving time or money, people check what others say. Reviews about how the organization treats people carry real weight.

Privacy comes first

Some people you serve would rather stay private. Never ask them for a public review, and never confirm in a reply that someone used a service.

Staff and board can't review

Google treats reviews from employees and others with a close tie to the organization as a conflict of interest and removes them.

Standard storefront verification

A real address customers or visitors can come to; Google chooses the method, often a short video or a mailed postcard.

// Google Posts

Google Posts: news that shows on your profile

Google Posts are short updates on your Google Business Profile, shown on Search and Maps. They're free, and they're part of every profile we set up or clean up: we set you up to use them and show you how.

For your business

  • Post fundraisers, volunteer days and community events as Event posts, and program news as Updates.
  • Never post an offer that trades anything for a review.

How it works

  • Three kinds: an Update (news), an Offer (a deal with dates) and an Event (a title with start and end dates and times).
  • Schedule a post ahead, and set it to repeat weekly or monthly, so a regular stop or special is posted once.
  • Posts older than six months are archived unless they have a date range, so dated Events and Offers stay tidy.
  • Don't type a phone number, email or social handle in a post; Google may remove it. Add the Call button instead.
  • Never post an offer that gives anything for a review. Offers are for deals open to every customer.

// Nonprofits questions

Nonprofits & Community Organizations: questions, answered plainly

Can we hand out cards at our fundraisers and events?
Yes, the same way to every guest, as an invitation. Never tie a review to a raffle entry, a prize or any giveaway; Google doesn't allow anything in return for a review.
Should we ask the people we serve for reviews?
Only where it's appropriate and private for them. For sensitive services, don't ask at all, and never confirm in a reply that someone was a client. The card can sit where anyone who wants to can use it.
Can our staff, board or volunteers leave reviews?
Staff and board members shouldn't: Google treats that as a conflict of interest. Anyone with a close tie to the organization should leave it to the people you serve and the public.
We're a chamber or business association. Is this our page?
Chambers and associations have their own page with a member-benefit program: see Chambers & Associations.
How does verification work for a nonprofit?
If people can visit your office or center, it's standard storefront verification. If you have no public location, Google's rules are stricter, and we check what you're eligible for first.
Is there anything we should avoid asking customers?
Yes: never ask for a specific star rating or wording, never offer anything in return for a review, and never ask only the customers you think are happy. The card simply makes it easy for everyone to leave an honest review.
Which Google category fits best: “Non-profit organization”, “Charity” or another?
It depends on what most of your work is. The exact Google categories for this trade are “Non-profit organization”, “Charity”, “Community center” and “Social services organization”. Your primary category should be the one that describes your main service. Secondary categories some businesses add, only when they really offer that service: “Volunteer organization”, “Youth organization”, “Foundation” and “Food bank”. Choose only categories that describe what you actually do. When we set up or clean up your profile, we check each one in Google's own category picker.
